How to Prevent the Summer Slide

Did you know that some students can lose up to two months of reading skills over the summer break? For parents, that means the carefree weeks of summer can quietly undo some of the progress children made during the school year. This learning loss, often called the “summer slide,” can make it harder for students to start the new school year with confidence. The good news? A little consistency goes a long way.

4 Simple Strategies for Summer Reading Success

1. Create a Daily Reading Routine

Children thrive on routine. Set aside 10-15 minutes each day for reading. Consistency is more important than length. Daily practice helps students build stamina, confidence, and a sense of identity as readers. Join in, as well.  When you read alongside your child, you model that you value reading and focus.

2. Let Your Child Read What Interests Them

Children are more inclined to read when the material captures their interest, whether it’s graphic novels, animal books, mysteries, or sports magazines. The aim is to keep them engaged and practicing. Additionally, understanding your child’s reading level is crucial to ensure they have access to books they can confidently read on their own.

3. Use an Adaptive Reading Program for Structured Practice

While independent reading is important, students also benefit from targeted literacy practice. I recommend IXL as an excellent tool for reinforcing phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and other essential literacy skills. The program adapts to your child’s needs and provides immediate feedback, helping them stay on track throughout the summer.

4. Celebrate Progress

Small rewards can make a big difference. Create a reading chart, track books completed, or celebrate milestones with a special outing. Positive reinforcement helps build motivation and confidence.

Summer doesn’t have to mean lost learning. With a simple routine, engaging books, and consistent practice through a reading program, your child can maintain—and even strengthen—their reading skills before the next school year begins.
