Reader's Theater
In this ongoing class, students will have fun improving their reading fluency! Reading fluency is much more than just reading quickly. Reading fluency is about developing accuracy (correct word pronunciation), rate (appropriate speed of reading), and prosody (expression in reading). Added benefits of developing strong fluency are the gains students will make in their reading comprehension. Building confidence and proficiency in these areas will ensure that your learner develops a strong foundation in reading that will help them succeed across all curricular areas.

Reader's Theater is a wonderful way to engage young readers in developing all three areas of fluency. Students will enjoy bringing a character to life and interacting with peers by practicing expressive reading and enjoying a fun story!

Each class will follow the following format:
-
Warm-up--warming up our voices by practicing a tongue twister together as well as a few sentences from the story focusing on our expression and intonation of voice.
-
Practice -- practicing some keywords from the script together.
-
Reader's Theater reading -- taking turns reading a variety of character parts.

Learning goals for this class are taken from the Common Core Reading Foundational Skills for Fluency:
-
Students can read with purpose and understanding
-
Students can read orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings
-
Students can use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary

A copy of the reader's theater script will be available for practice and use in classes.
